PSN 100% Pea Protein Isolate Review – As Good As Whey?

Our posts may contain affiliate links and if you make a purchase through one of those links we may earn a small commission from the vendor which goes towards the upkeep of this site and WON’T cost you a penny more

In this post, we will be taking a look at PSN 100% Pea Protein Isolate powder which is a fantastic plant-based alternative to whey protein powder making it an excellent choice for vegan and vegetarian athletes.

It has a nutrition profile that’s almost identical to whey protein and contains all the same amino acids required for recovery and growth following heavy and intense workouts, plus it’s also completely free from gluten, lactose, cholesterol, and animal products too.

In this full review, we will cover everything from ordering and delivery, right through to using it, what other customers are saying about it, and where to get the best deal…

Ordering, Delivery, And First Impressions…

PSN Pea Protein was easy to order, we picked ours up on eBay, and was delivered a couple of days after ordering, well within the stated delivery time.

We’ve used this stuff before and can verify that they do deliver quickly, on time every time so we can’t fault them for their service.

The item came well packaged and in excellent condition.

The pouch is made from pretty tough plastic so there’s not much danger of it splitting, and the seal is pretty good too, we’ve never had one fail on us before the pouch was empty and in the past, we ordered the 5 kg pouches which do last a fairly long time.

On the back of the pack there’s the usual nutrition information and mixing instructions, as well as some other basic product information…

The powder itself is nice and loose, with no clumps or lumps, plus it’s also a very fine powder so you need to be careful handling the pouch when it’s open.

There’s also a measuring scoop included in the pouch too, however, we recommend weighing out your powder for reasons explained in this article…

We ordered the banana flavour this time and it does smell nice and banana-like. There’s no artificial kind of smell to it although it does smell kind of ‘sweet’.

Nutrition…

PSN Pea Protein is as nutritious as whey protein and contains a full amino acid profile.

It’s also low in carbs and fat, making it a great choice if you’re counting the calories, plus it’s also enhanced with amino acids to fuel muscle recovery and growth.

PSN Pea Protein is also an excellent source of high biological value protein that’s completely free from animal products, making it a great choice for vegans and vegetarians, as well as anyone wanting a cleaner source of protein.

And it’s also high in Lysine and Arginine which are essential for maintaining lean muscle mass making it a fantastic choice of weight loss protein powder too.

Mixing…

PSN Pea Protein does mix easily and the powder completely dissolves to produce a smooth shake.

The shake is noticeably thicker than you get when using a whey protein powder, probably more like a mass gainer shake in terms of consistency, however, if this isn’t to your liking you can get round it by adding more water.

If you mix this stuff in a shaker cup, be prepared for a large frothy head on your shake that takes forever to go down.

We found it best to mix in a shaker cup using a fork and not mixing too quickly.

This way we still got a nice smooth shake, but without the frothy head.

Taste…

Although it doesn’t taste as good as a banana flavoured whey protein powder does, it still tastes pretty good.

It definitely tastes like bananas, there is the ‘pea protein aftertaste’ that comes with most pea protein powders, but it’s in no way unpleasant and doesn’t spoil the experience.

Side Effects…

We didn’t notice any at all.

Even though you get a thicker and slightly more filling shake than when using whey, this stuff sits nice and light on your stomach and doesn’t bloat you up or cause excessive wind like you may expect it to being made from peas.

How to take it…

Pure Source Nutrition recommends mixing 1 level scoop, which they say is 30 g, with 350-450 ml of water or milk in a shaker cup, and shaking for around 60 seconds, and taking 2-3 shakes per day.

We checked and 1 level scoop is just under 35 g, and so, as we recommend in this article, so as not to end up using more than you need, weigh out the powder using a cheap set of digital scales like these.

And when it comes to actually mixing it, use a fork otherwise it gets a pretty big frothy head on it which is also pretty much permanent and makes drinking your shake take far longer than necessary.

When to take it…

Take it whenever you would normally take your whey protein shake, with one shake being taken after training to feed your muscles some much-needed amino acids and fire up the recovery and growth process.

Other than that, take it at any time of day you need to help meet your daily protein requirements.

Who it’s for…

PSN Pea Protein is for anyone who is training hard to increase strength and muscle size and is looking for a plant-based alternative to whey protein powder which will still give them just as much protein per serving with a full amino acid profile.

This make is a particularly good choice for vegan bodybuilders, powerlifters, and strength athletes, as well as runners, cyclists, and other endurance-based athletes.

What other customers are saying…

In order to provide you with as broad a picture as possible, we took a look at what other people who are buying and using this product, right now are saying about it.

One of the best places we’ve found to go to do this is Amazon as they actually verify the reviews which are left for products to make sure that the person leaving the review has actually bought the product.

Also, Amazon reviewers can be pretty blunt, so, if they don’t like something, they let you know, and likewise when they do, making the reviews pretty accurate and not just painting a pretty picture to influence sales.

At the time of writing this review, PSN Pea Protein Powder has an average customer rating of 5 out of 5 stars, which couldn’t be better, however, we should point out that this is from just 6 ratings, and only 1 actual review has been left so far.

As this isn’t much to go on we took a look at the feedback being left on eBay for this product, where it seems to be selling really well and found that customers there are saying how pleased they are with the taste, how it mixes, and the price, as well as the speed at which their orders were delivered.

Our Verdict…

We really like PSN Pea Protein Isolate.

It makes a really great alternative to whey protein powder, the only drawback is that it takes longer to mix due to it frothing up in a shaker cup.

It’s pretty much identical to whey in terms of nutrition too.

Our preferred way of using it is to mix it with our breakfast porridge although we do mix it up with a fork when we’ve got the time for a smooth and tasty shake.

Although it tastes pretty good it’s not in the same league as whey protein powders, plus you do need to add quite a bit more liquid as it’s way more absorbent and produces a much thicker drink.

Also, this stuff is nice and light on your stomach too, and so great to take pre-workout to prevent muscle breakdown during strenuous training sessions.

It’s also pretty good value for money too, especially if you get the 5 kg size pouch which costs as little as £32…not many whey protein powders out there at such a great price!

For anyone looking for a plant-based alternative to whey protein, with an almost identical nutrition profile, we highly recommend giving this one a shot.

Effectiveness…

We were a little concerned at first about Whey Protein 80 only having around 20 g of protein per serving.

No doubt you already know that the more popular brands contain around 24 g per serving.

We overcame this by mixing with 100 ml of semi skimmed milk which added 3.4 g, bringing the total protein content up and only adding around 20 calories.

Once we had that sorted out we found this particular protein powder to be pretty much as effective as most others we have tried.

Muscle soreness was no worse for using this, recovery rates were very acceptable and we didn’t notice any reduction in gains or performance.

Overall the effectiveness of Whey Protein 80 is very impressive.

How It Tastes…

The Protein Works are committed to producing great tasting supplements using all natural flavours.

That commitment shows through when it comes to the taste of Whey Protein 80. This stuff really does taste amazing!

There are 14 different flavours to choose from, that’s including the unflavoured one and we have yet to find one that we can point to and say ‘this tastes like shit’.

The way they’ve managed to come up with a protein powder that tastes this good using all natural flavours and without any thickeners or fillers is amazing.

The Chocolate Silk and Strawberries And Cream options are pretty addictive- so be warned!

And that’s just mixing it with water…the taste takes on a whole new dimension when you mix it with milk.

If you’ve tried shakes renowned for their great taste like BSN Syntha-6 Edge, Phd Nutrition Diet Whey or Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard Whey you’ll have an idea of the quality of taste we’re talking about here.

How It Mixes…

The Protein Works Whey Protein 80 mixes every bit as well as the more expensive brands out there.

Just add it to your shaker cup with the your preferred amount of water or milk and give it a good shake.

That’s all you need do to get a great tasting, smooth, and lumpless shake.

Remember if you mix it with milk you will get a thicker shake than mixing with water.

If you’re on the lookout for a decent shaker cup that mixes quickly and thoroughly we recommend you check out the PhD Mixball.

Best Time To Use It…

Serving size: 25 g.

We recommend measuring out your Whey Protein 80 according to the advice given in this article as protein powder scoops are not very accurate

The manufacturers recommend taking 3-5 servings per day of Whey Protein 80, depending upon your own personal needs:

  • Take 1 serving upon awakening
  • Followed by 1 serving 30-45 mins prior to exercise
  • And a further serving immediately after exercise
  • You can also take 1 serving between meals
  • And 1 serving before bed

We recommend taking this protein powder pre-workout as it’s easy to digest, for some extra fuel and to help prevent muscle breakdown during training…

As well as post-workout to help fuel the recovery and growth process…

Plus at any other time of the day when you may need to get some quality protein to help you meet your macros.

Prices And Value For Money…

Right now you can pick up a 2 kg pouch for £26.90 which works out at £13.45/kg.

A 2 kg pouch contains 80 servings which works out at £0.34 per serving.

You’ll also get free delivery if you order through this link.

As for value, it’s excellent value for money. Out of all the protein powders we’ve tried the only one that beats it on price is MyProtein Impact Whey.

In our opinion, The Protein Works Whey Protein 80 is definitely worth spending a few extra pennies on just for the amazing taste.

Note: Prices vary according to flavour for some reason.

Customer Reviews…

At the time of updating this review, TPW Whey Protein 80 has an average customer feedback score of 4.5 out of 5 which we think is pretty decent, and that’s from an impressive 3,568 reviews.

Of those reviews, 70% are 5-star, with a further 17% being 4-star, which we think shows that this particular protein powder is performing very well indeed for the vast majority of people buying it on Amazon.

Here’s a quick look at what they are saying…

A large number of them say they like the way this protein powder tastes when mixed with just water, they compare it to some of the more expensive brands saying it’s every bit as good, and that it tastes even better still when mixed with milk.

Others are liking the price saying that it’s really good value for money, and again they compare it to more expensive protein powders and say that this one comes out on top in terms of value.

The nutritional profile is something else they seem really happy with saying that it’s easy to slot TPW Whey Protein 80 into their nutrition plan without it messing up their macros.

The fact that the pouch seal outlasts the powder is another thing that some of them are commenting on-we’ve had pouches with crappy seals on them ourselves so we know how they feel.

They do seem to be split on the way it mixes though, some are happy that it mixes up really well in just a shaker cup while others are saying that they are getting lumpy shakes…we had no problems with the way it mixes.

And they also like how it helps them gain lean muscle without gaining fat at the same which makes it a good choice for clean bulking, as well as for preserving muscle mass when losing weight too.

There are a number of customers who aren’t as impressed with this protein powder and who are giving it just 3-stars or less.

Here are some of the things they are reporting having issues with…

A number of them are saying they don;y like the way it tastes, it’s either too sweet for them or they just don’t like the taste.

Another user isn’t happy with the protein content saying it’s lower than you get with other brands.

And another customer received a damaged pouch.

Verdict…

We found The Protein Works Whey Protein 80 to be a  far better supplement than we first expected. We also expect to see it increase massively in popularity.

We like the way it mixes and tastes, along with the fact that it’s light on your stomach which makes it a good choice to use as a muscle preserver and energy boost when used pre-workout.

We also like that it’s pretty versatile and can be used to effectively accomplish pretty much all your training goals.

From our experience, The Protein Works have managed to produce a great tasting, top quality protein powder at a bargain-basement price point.

If you’ve been thinking of changing your protein powder, Whey Protein 80 is definitely worth a shot.

The value for money you get with this protein powder supplement is good too, so anyone on a budget who is looking for a quality protein powder should at least check this one out.

Also, if you’re thinking expensive is best then this particular protein powder might just be the one to change your mind.

We highly recommend it to hard-training athletes, gym-goers and sportspeople who need a quality protein to assist them with recovery and new muscle growth.

Best Place To Buy The Protein Works Whey Protein 80…

Before committing to buy we recommend first going over to Amazon and checking out Whey Protein 80 in full, including the customer reviews and the customer answered questions, to make sure it’s exactly what you are looking for.

The Amazon listing, in conjunction with this review, will give you a valuable insight into how well this protein powder is performing, right now, in the real world for real people.

Once you’re happy with everything and you’re ready to buy, go over to eBay and see if you can pick it up at a better price there, often you will be able to so it’s well worth taking the time to check.

Be sure to take any applicable extra delivery costs into account as they will affect the overall cost per serving.

Amazon and eBay sellers deliver pretty fast too, however, we have found Amazon to be the fastest more often than not so if you need your protein powder in a hurry, Amazon will more than likely be the place to get it from, especially if you sign up for the Amazon Prime 30-Day Free Trial.

Sellers on Amazon and eBay also make returning any items you may not be happy with for a full refund pretty straightforward and easy to do too.

Final Thoughts…

Please check out any supplements in full before buying them to be sure they are going to be the best ones to help you achieve your training goals.

At the end of the day, it’s the nutritional content that’s going to get you where you want to go, not the way it mixes, or the way it tastes, and certainly not how much it costs.

TPW Whey Protein 80 is a very reasonably priced, versatile and convenient quality protein powder with a great nutritional profile and should slot right into your existing eating plan whatever your goals may be.

A couple of alternatives we’ve tried and which are similar in nutrition and price are Bulk Pure Whey Protein powder which also mixes and tastes really good, and MyProtein Impact Whey which is very similar in mixing and taste to Whey Protein 80, and both of them are well worth taking a look at.
