It has a nutrition profile that’s almost identical to whey protein and contains all the same amino acids required for recovery and growth following heavy and intense workouts, plus it’s also completely free from gluten, lactose, cholesterol, and animal products too.

Ordering, Delivery, And First Impressions…

PSN Pea Protein was easy to order, we picked ours up on eBay, and was delivered a couple of days after ordering, well within the stated delivery time.

We’ve used this stuff before and can verify that they do deliver quickly, on time every time so we can’t fault them for their service.

The item came well packaged and in excellent condition.

The pouch is made from pretty tough plastic so there’s not much danger of it splitting, and the seal is pretty good too, we’ve never had one fail on us before the pouch was empty and in the past, we ordered the 5 kg pouches which do last a fairly long time.

On the back of the pack there’s the usual nutrition information and mixing instructions, as well as some other basic product information…

The powder itself is nice and loose, with no clumps or lumps, plus it’s also a very fine powder so you need to be careful handling the pouch when it’s open.

There’s also a measuring scoop included in the pouch too, however, we recommend weighing out your powder for reasons explained in this article…

We ordered the banana flavour this time and it does smell nice and banana-like. There’s no artificial kind of smell to it although it does smell kind of ‘sweet’.

Nutrition…

PSN Pea Protein is as nutritious as whey protein and contains a full amino acid profile.

It’s also low in carbs and fat, making it a great choice if you’re counting the calories, plus it’s also enhanced with amino acids to fuel muscle recovery and growth.

PSN Pea Protein is also an excellent source of high biological value protein that’s completely free from animal products, making it a great choice for vegans and vegetarians, as well as anyone wanting a cleaner source of protein.

And it’s also high in Lysine and Arginine which are essential for maintaining lean muscle mass making it a fantastic choice of weight loss protein powder too.

Mixing…

PSN Pea Protein does mix easily and the powder completely dissolves to produce a smooth shake.

The shake is noticeably thicker than you get when using a whey protein powder, probably more like a mass gainer shake in terms of consistency, however, if this isn’t to your liking you can get round it by adding more water.

If you mix this stuff in a shaker cup, be prepared for a large frothy head on your shake that takes forever to go down.

We found it best to mix in a shaker cup using a fork and not mixing too quickly.

This way we still got a nice smooth shake, but without the frothy head.

Taste…

Although it doesn’t taste as good as a banana flavoured whey protein powder does, it still tastes pretty good.

It definitely tastes like bananas, there is the ‘pea protein aftertaste’ that comes with most pea protein powders, but it’s in no way unpleasant and doesn’t spoil the experience.

Side Effects…

We didn’t notice any at all.

Even though you get a thicker and slightly more filling shake than when using whey, this stuff sits nice and light on your stomach and doesn’t bloat you up or cause excessive wind like you may expect it to being made from peas.

How to take it…

Pure Source Nutrition recommends mixing 1 level scoop, which they say is 30 g, with 350-450 ml of water or milk in a shaker cup, and shaking for around 60 seconds, and taking 2-3 shakes per day.

We checked and 1 level scoop is just under 35 g, and so, as we recommend in this article, so as not to end up using more than you need, weigh out the powder using a cheap set of digital scales like these.

And when it comes to actually mixing it, use a fork otherwise it gets a pretty big frothy head on it which is also pretty much permanent and makes drinking your shake take far longer than necessary.

When to take it…

Take it whenever you would normally take your whey protein shake, with one shake being taken after training to feed your muscles some much-needed amino acids and fire up the recovery and growth process.

Other than that, take it at any time of day you need to help meet your daily protein requirements.

Who it’s for…

PSN Pea Protein is for anyone who is training hard to increase strength and muscle size and is looking for a plant-based alternative to whey protein powder which will still give them just as much protein per serving with a full amino acid profile.

This make is a particularly good choice for vegan bodybuilders, powerlifters, and strength athletes, as well as runners, cyclists, and other endurance-based athletes.

What other customers are saying…

In order to provide you with as broad a picture as possible, we took a look at what other people who are buying and using this product, right now are saying about it.

One of the best places we’ve found to go to do this is Amazon as they actually verify the reviews which are left for products to make sure that the person leaving the review has actually bought the product.

Also, Amazon reviewers can be pretty blunt, so, if they don’t like something, they let you know, and likewise when they do, making the reviews pretty accurate and not just painting a pretty picture to influence sales.

At the time of writing this review, PSN Pea Protein Powder has an average customer rating of 5 out of 5 stars, which couldn’t be better, however, we should point out that this is from just 6 ratings, and only 1 actual review has been left so far.

As this isn’t much to go on we took a look at the feedback being left on eBay for this product, where it seems to be selling really well and found that customers there are saying how pleased they are with the taste, how it mixes, and the price, as well as the speed at which their orders were delivered.

Our Verdict…

We really like PSN Pea Protein Isolate.

It makes a really great alternative to whey protein powder, the only drawback is that it takes longer to mix due to it frothing up in a shaker cup.

It’s pretty much identical to whey in terms of nutrition too.

Our preferred way of using it is to mix it with our breakfast porridge although we do mix it up with a fork when we’ve got the time for a smooth and tasty shake.

Although it tastes pretty good it’s not in the same league as whey protein powders, plus you do need to add quite a bit more liquid as it’s way more absorbent and produces a much thicker drink.

Also, this stuff is nice and light on your stomach too, and so great to take pre-workout to prevent muscle breakdown during strenuous training sessions.

It’s also pretty good value for money too, especially if you get the 5 kg size pouch which costs as little as £32…not many whey protein powders out there at such a great price!

For anyone looking for a plant-based alternative to whey protein, with an almost identical nutrition profile, we highly recommend giving this one a shot.
