Best Tasting Protein Powders – Find Out Which 3 That Came Top In Our Taste Test

We recently set ourselves the task of finding out which are the 3 best tasting protein powders on offer today.

Although the way a protein shake tastes has nothing to do with its muscle building effectiveness, it’s still important.

Let’s face it…

There’s nothing worse after a grueling workout than trying to down a protein shake that tastes rank.

So we took the 10 best protein powders for 2018 and put them through a taste test. Now we know that what tastes amazing to one person might well taste like shit to another and vice versa.

To allow for this we combined our own findings with what we learned from our online research to come up with what we believe to be the top 3.

Now Let’s Take A Closer Look…

Our Top 3 Best Tasting Protein Powders:

Here are the 3 protein powders which for us literally just blew away the competition.  Have a look, check out the full reviews and see what you think.

Our First Choice In Best Tasting Protein Powders…

BSN Syntha-6 Edge:

best tasting protein powdersThe one that comes out top for us is BSN Syntha-6 EdgeThis one really does have the taste and texture of an actual milkshake.

We tried the Chocolate Milkshake, Strawberry Milkshake and Vanilla Ice Cream flavours and were blown away by them all. And that was just mixing them with water.

Mixing Syntha-6 Edge with milk takes the whole taste thing to another level completely.

We also found it not to have the ‘protein shake aftertaste’ that some shakes have. It’s sweet, but just sweet enough without being sickly.

Some people did say that the Cookies And Cream flavour was a bit too sweet for them though.

All in all we find Syntha-6 Edge to be easily the best tasting protein powder around. If taste is important to you we highly recommend you grab some fast and try it for yourself. Read more on BSN Syntha-6 Edge.

Our final rating: 4.9 out of 5.

Our Second Choice In Best Tasting Protein Powders…

PhD Nutrition Diet Whey:

best tasting protein powders 2018In close second place is the amazing tasting PhD Nutrition Diet Whey.

Phd Nutrition claim that Diet Whey has a ‘market-leading taste’ with an ‘easy to drink texture’. We decided to put those statements to the test.

We tried the White Chocolate Deluxe, Vanilla Creme and Strawberry Delight flavours, first mixed with water, then with milk.

Just like BSN Syntha-6 Edge above, when just mixed with water Diet Whey could easily be said to have a market leading taste. In fact it tastes fantastic. And that applies to each of the 3 flavours we tried.

The texture was definitely ‘easy to drink’, almost velvety.

When mixed with milk we found it tasted even better and the texture, even though a little thicker, could only be described as velvet cream.

Again we strongly recommend grabbing some Diet Whey and seeing for yourself just how amazing it actually tastes. Read more about Phd Nutrition Diet Whey.

Our final rating: 4.8 out of 5.

Our Third Choice In Best Tasting Protein Powders…

Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard Whey:

best tasting protein powdersAnd in third place comes the great tasting Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard Whey.

At the start of our taste test we fully expected Gold Standard Whey to take first place. And no doubt there will be plenty of people out there for who it does.

That only goes to show just what a close run thing this was.

We tried the Double Rich Chocolate, Strawberry and Vanilla Ice Cream flavours. Again we tried each of them mixed with water, and then mixed with milk.

We found they all tasted great when mixed with just water. Very similar to a milkshake only not quite as sweet is probably the best description.

When mixed with milk it has a richer and creamier taste but adding milk doesn’t make it taste any sweeter.

We found that overall Gold Standard Whey seems to lack that tiny bit of something that the other two have. Having said that, it’s still a great tasting shake and it’s well worth grabbing a tub and trying for yourself. If you’re into great tasting shakes you’ll love this one. Our final rating: 4.7 out of 5.

Final Thoughts When Choosing The Best Tasting Protein Powders…

As mentioned at the start, nobody wants to get lumbered with a full tub of protein powder that tastes rank.

Fortunately there are quite a few out there that do actually taste pretty good.

However we urge you to remember why you’re using a protein powder in the first place. And the reason should be – to enhance recovery, repair and growth after your workouts.

There are, no doubt, protein powders out there that taste rank and yet are more effective at kick-starting the growth and recovery process following strenuous workouts than far better tasting ones.

So when selecting a protein powder don’t allow effectiveness to take second place to taste, if you to maximise your results that is.
