MyProtein Slow Release Casein Protein Powder Review...

If you’re looking for a decent bedtime protein powder to keep you growing and burning fat while you sleep, and you’re thinking of giving MyProtein Slow-Release Casein a try and would like to know exactly what you’ll be getting for your money if you do, you’re on the right page.

Like you, we were looking for a quality casein protein powder ourselves. We came across this one on Amazon, liked what we read about it, and ordered some to put to the test.

In this review we will tell you our complete experience, from ordering it, right through to how it mixes and tastes, and the benefits we got from using it.

If you’re already familiar with MyProtein Slow-Release Casein and would prefer to skip the review and go ahead and grab a pouch for yourself…

Ordering, Delivery and First Impressions…

Ordering was really easy and this item was in fact delivered the following day so no hanging round waiting which is always a bonus.

The order was also very well packaged in a decent quality cardboard box with some of those air filled packing things inside it too to protect the contents from becoming bashed about and damaged in transit.

The pouch itself is pretty sturdy and has a decent re-sealable seal which seems a fair bit stronger that you get on most protein powder pouches.

It’s nothing fancy, a brief description on the front of what you’re getting, with a more detailed breakdown of the nutritional content and how to take it on the back.

When you open the pouch, the powder smells nice and chocolatey in a natural and fresh kind of way.

The powder is also pretty fine and nice and loose with no lumps or clumps anywhere.

Product Highlights…

  • Slowly digested ideal for bedtime recovery
  • 26g protein per serving
  • Contributes to growth & maintenance of muscle mass
  • Directions: Do not exceed the recommended dosage. See product label for suggested use.
  • Flavour: Chocolate

Casein protein takes around 8 hours to digest making it perfect for taking just before bed.

As you sleep your muscles are drip-fed a steady supply of amino acids which provides the perfect environment for growth while you sleep.

Each serving contains a full 26g of high quality 100% milk protein to help prevent your muscles from breaking down overnight from sleeping in a fasted state…according to the Amazon listing that is…

However, as you can see in the image below, the actual amount of protein per 30g serving according to the nutrition panel on the back of the pouch is 23g.

MyProtein Slow Release Casein nutrition facts

You can also expect to burn some additional body fat as you sleep due to the enhanced muscle building effects of casein.

Nutrition…

As you can see above, MyProtein Slow Release Casein contains 23g of protein per serving which is slightly less than you get in ON’s Gold Standard Casein, and more or less the same, give or take a gram, as you get in most leading whey protein powders.

You also get 2.0g of carbs per 30g serving, according to the panel on the pouch, which is nice and low, less than you get in a good quality whey, making this casein protein powder also a great choice for weight management.

It’s also low in fat at just 0.2g per 30g serving, and has just 107 calories, again making it perfect for weight loss, lean bulking and muscle maintenance.

How It Mixes…

The powder mixes pretty well in a standard shaker cup, all the powder dissolves and there are no lumps or gritty bits.

The only thing we found is that the shake gets quite a big foamy head on it once mixed.

MyProtein Slow Release Casein mixes

We got around this by mixing it up 30 mins before taking it and putting it in the fridge to let the froth settle.

It didn’t disappear completely but there wasnt enough left after the 30 minutes to complain about.

MyProtein Slow Release Casein shakes

Refrigerating the shake also seemed to improve the flavour slightly which was a little bit of a bonus.

How It Tastes…

In terms of the flavour, it tastes pretty good although every now and then it does have a slightly artificial quality about it, plus the flavour doesn’t seem to last like most chocolate flavour protein shakes do.

Once you swallow the drink, the flavour pretty much disappears.

It’s pretty smooth though, easy to get down and doesn’t sit heavily on the stomach which is great just before bed.

There’s also some froth left at the bottom and on the sides of the shaker when you’ve finished drinking.

Side Effects…

None at all that we experienced.

The shake went down nice and smoothly, it didn’t cause any bloating, discomfort, or sit heavily on the stomach.

And there was no excess wind either.

How To Take…

MyProtein recommend mixing 1.25 scoops which they give as being 30g with 200-300ml of water 30 mins before bed.

MyProtein Slow Release Casein instructions

We recommend weighing out 30g as protein powder scoops are often inaccurate (read more about scoops in this article), in this case 1.25 scoops is actually 40.6g of powder.

As you can see, this would mean you taking an extra 30% of this protein powder which could see you gaining unwanted fat over time as well as reducing the value for money of the powder by 30%.

When To Take…

Although Slow Release Casein is primarily used as a bedtime protein powder due to its slow release of aminos which feed your muscles as you sleep, you can actually take it at any other time of the day when you need some protein.

This is a great protein powder to use pre-workout for sustained energy and to help reduce muscular breakdown as you train.

You can also use it post-workout in place of your regular whey protein powder to drip feed your muscles with amino acids over a longer period of time.

It’s also great for using between meals as the slow rate of digestion keeps you feeling fuller for longer.

Who It’s For…

MyProtein Slow Release Casein is perfect for anyone looking for round the clock muscle growth.

While most people traditionally use whey protein at regular intervals during the day, they often overlook feeding their muscles through the night.

Supplementing with a high-quality casein protein powder like this one just before going to bed helps to keep the body in an anabolic state and supports muscle growth as you sleep.

So, anyone serious about maximizing muscle growth from their training efforts will benefit hugely from adding this particular protein supplement to their diet.

Customer Opinion…

At the time of putting this review together MyProtein Slow Release Casein is getting some pretty mixed customer feedback from the people who are buying it on Amazon.

Although it only has 167 reviews at the moment it has an average customer rating of 3.9 out of 5 stars, 46% of them are 5 star reviews, and a further 20% are 4 star reviews.

The Good…

The people who like it are saying how well it mixes and tastes, and they also like that it doesn’t cause any bloating, which is essential for a bedtime protein.

Another thing they like is that it keeps them feeling fuller for longer between meals when taken during the day, and also prevents them from waking up hungry when taken before bed.

The Not-So-Good…

The people who aren’t as happy with it and who are giving it just 3 stars or less are saying that they don’t like the way it mixes and tastes.

One customer says it was heavy on their stomach, and another says it smelled rotten when they opened the pouch!

A couple more are disappointed with the ziplock seal on the pouch saying its difficult to reseal after opening.

Our Verdict…

We like MyProtein Slow Release Casein and give it 4.7 out of 5 stars.

Here’s why…

It was delivered really quickly and came well packaged rather than taking days to arrive after just being slung in a plastic mailer like some we have received in the past.

The pouch is good quality with a reliable seal that stayed in full working order to the last serving.

The powder itself smells nice and chocolatey, there’s nothing artificial about it and it’s nice and loose with no lumps or clumps.

Mixing with water in just a shaker cup is really easy, and once mixed gives you a really smooth textured shake.

Although we weren’t massively impressed with the flavour to begin with, once we figured out that it tastes a lot better, if not quite as good as BW Pure Micellar Casein, after being chilled in the refrigerator for around half an hour, we were more than happy with the taste.

We also like that there are no unpleasant side effects such as excessive farts, bloating or digestive issues, which makes it a fantastic bedtime protein powder in our book.

Plus after using this stuff for a short time muscles feel fuller and workouts become a little easier.

And we also think it’s pretty reasonably priced too.

So, MyProtein Slow Release Casein gets the thumbs up from us and we have no hesitation in recommending to anyone as a great choice of bedtime protein powder.

Getting The Best Deal…

Getting the best deal on your protein powder is just about as important as getting the right protein powder, here’s how we recommend going about it…

MyProtein Slow Release Casein amazon

First head over to Amazon, they usually have the best prices, and what they also have is in our opinion the best customer feedback.

This is important for getting the bigger picture on how well, or not, a particular product is performing for real people in the real world.

So, go to Amazon and do your research, check out the reviews, and the customer answered questions, along with the product page information.

Don’t forget to check out alternative products too, just to be sure you’re getting the best one for you.

Then, once you’re happy and ready to buy, head over to eBay and see if you can get the same product at a better price.

And don’t forget to take any delivery charges into account too, both platforms offer free delivery options, however, there is sometimes a minimum spend amount so keep an eye out for that.
